A globe valve is an instrument used to stop and/or control the flow of fluids in a pipeline. It works by halting the flow of a fluid through a pipe. The name globe comes about due to the valve’s cylindrical shape. There are usually two halves of the body within the globe valve that are separated by an internal baffle.
Even though globe valves exhibit more pressure drops than gate valves, you can use them where the pressure drop via the valve is a non-controlling factor. Another name for globe valves is throttle valves when they are used for throttling purposes.
What is the purpose of a globe valve, and what is it used for?
Many types of valves can be designated as globe valves. They could be isolation valves, control valves, and more. As mentioned earlier, the globe refers to the spherical shape of the valve body.
The primary purpose of a globe valve is to halt, start, and regulate liquid and gas flow in pipes. It usually has a movable disk-type component and a non-moving ring seat in a cylindrical body. The globe valve’s seat is at the center and side-by-side to the pipe, while the seat’s opening is shut off using a disk or plug. The structure of globe valves allows them to handle flow in both directions.

What is the most common application of a globe valve?
Globe valves are primarily used in a basic water faucet. Upon turning the handwheel, there is lowering or lifting of the disc. If the disc is lowered to the maximum, the water supply completely shuts off. However, when the disc is at its topmost position, the flow of water is at its highest rate. A globe valve may be sealed in more extensive industrial settings using an electrical actuator rather than a manual handle.
There is usually a baffle inside a globe valve. This baffle makes the liquid change its direction and goes through the baffle. This means that the fluid cannot flow as freely and causes the pressure in the valve to drop. Globe valves are incompatible with slurries or thicker liquids that the baffle can obstruct.
What industry or company uses globe valves?
Where appropriate, globe valves can be used in many process industries. However, their application determines the valve’s internal construction. For instance, a globe control valve would be trimmed with internal components designed to control the process fluid.
Globe valves are widely used in the plant piping industry and can be operated manually or automatically. Unlike gate valves, globe valves will help regulate pressure flows and complete the flow of liquids or their complete shutoff.
How is a globe valve made?
Globe valves are mostly cast due to the complex shape of the flow passages. However, they can also be made from wrought materials for specific applications.
The disc and seat rings that globe valves are cast with are mostly made with bronze. On the other hand, steel-globe valves with temperatures exceeding 350°C have their trim made of stainless steel. This is crucial in providing resistance to seizing and galling. It is vital to heat-treat the valve’s mating faces to derive differential hardness values. Manufacturing globe valves also involves using other trim materials like cobalt-based alloys.
It is also vital to grind the seating surface to achieve full-bearing surface contact during valve closure. An extended disk locknut maintains alignment for lower pressure classes, with disc guides cast into the valve body for higher pressures. Usually, the disc face and seat ring galling are prevented by the disc turning freely on the stem.
